    Find a name worth keeping

Choose Generate 12 names for a random set. To narrow it down, enter starting letters, choose a character length or select a recorded-count range. All three filters apply together and refresh the results as you change them. Reset filters restores the full suggestion pool and keeps your shortlist.

The generator samples spellings equally. Luna does not get more chances than a name with two records. This makes less familiar names easier to discover; it does not imitate the distribution of names among cats. Each set has no repeated spelling, but a later set may include a previous suggestion.

Choose Browse matches to see every matching name, twenty per page. Order them alphabetically or by their license counts. Save all matches · CSV downloads the complete filtered list, not just the visible page, with the original ranks and source. Filtering never changes a name’s rank in the snapshot.

    Make a shortlist

Use Shortlist beside a name to keep it while you try other filters or generate more ideas. Keep up to twelve names, remove any individually or clear the list. Selecting a name itself opens its frequency result below.

Copy names gives you one name per line for your notes. If clipboard access fails, the page offers selected text you can copy manually. Save list · TXT adds each name’s count, rank and source. The list stays on this page only: copy or save before refreshing or leaving.

For another pet, the dog name generator uses New York City dog-license records. Its counts describe a different place and record period, so comparing them directly with these Seattle cat counts would be misleading.

Look up a name beyond the suggestions

The lookup covers all 6,106 named spellings, including those recorded once and names too long for the generator. It ignores capitalization and extra spaces while preserving punctuation and accents. Try the recorded spelling if a variation does not match. Display capitalization is for readability; the CSV retains the normalized source spelling.

A name absent from the file gets no count or rank. That result cannot tell you whether the name is unique, how many unlicensed cats have it or how common it is outside Seattle.

    Source and limits

For breed frequency, compare the GCCF cat-breed registrations for 2024 and 2025. That explorer keeps breed and coat entries separate and distinguishes a recorded zero from an unknown count.

The City of Seattle’s Seattle Pet Licenses dataset supplies 13,076 cat license records in the July 2026 snapshot, published as public domain. The source description dates the list to July 6, while the records include an issue date on July 7; this page labels the snapshot by month.

We combine case and spacing variants of each name. The 18 blank or unknown-name records remain in the total and full CSV but have no name rank. Names with equal counts share a rank, followed by a gap: Charlie and Oliver each have 49 records and share rank four; the next name is rank six.

Counts describe license records, not a guaranteed number of distinct cats. Unlicensed cats are outside this list. No owner information, license numbers, addresses or ZIP codes are included in this tool. Its public aggregate data is the same for every visitor; typed names, filters and shortlists stay in your browser.

    Good questions

How does the random cat name generator choose names?

It selects up to twelve different matching spellings, giving each an equal chance. Suggestions have at least two Seattle cat-license records and 2–24 characters. A later set can include a name you saw before. The lookup and full CSV also include names outside this suggestion pool.

What is the most popular cat name in these records?

Luna has the most records in Seattle’s July 2026 cat-license snapshot: 111 of 13,076. Lucy follows with 63 and Lily with 50. These are local license records, not a national ranking or a census of all cats.

Can I check whether my cat’s name is rare?

The lookup searches all 6,106 named spellings and shows a count, share and rank within this Seattle snapshot. An absent name is unknown in this source, not proof of uniqueness. A low recorded count does not establish rarity elsewhere.

Does the tool offer male, female or breed-specific cat names?

No. The aggregate table used here contains names and counts, not a name’s gender, meaning or suitability for a breed. You can narrow names by starting letters, length and recorded frequency.
