The lowest positive counts in 2025
Four entries tied at one registration each: Braque D’Auvergne (Import Register), Griffon Fauve de Bretagne (Import Register), Sloughi and Greenland Dog. These are annual UK registrations published by The Royal Kennel Club, not estimates of how many dogs of each breed are alive.
Ten breed entries had a recorded zero. Segugio Italiano had no reported figure for 2025. The table preserves that difference: 0 is an observed registry count; a blank is unknown. Neither establishes that a breed has disappeared.
Look at more than one year
Choose a breed and year to see its count, its position among positive entries, and its history from 2016 to 2025. A very small annual count can change sharply the following year. The history lets you distinguish a one-year low from repeatedly small registrations without inventing a trend from one point.
Early blanks for newly listed breeds remain blank. The explorer does not fill them with zero or extend a later count backward. The CSV includes every published row and year, including the separate development-register entry excluded from the breed ranking.
What counts as a breed here?
The source separates some coat and size varieties, such as the different Dachshund registrations. The lookup keeps those exact units. Entries marked “Imp” belong to the Imported Breed Register; the label does not provide a count of all dogs imported into the country.
A separate Leonberger development-register row is available in the table and download, but it does not compete with ordinary breed entries in the rarity ranking. This prevents a special registration category from appearing to be a separate rare breed.
Why this is not a worldwide ranking
A dog can be unregistered, registered with another organization or already alive from an earlier year. These tables cannot count those dogs. “Rarest in this year’s registrations” is therefore a narrower statement than “rarest dog in the world”.
The source’s group totals differ slightly from the sum of their rows for terriers in 2023 and toys in 2025. We retain the individual published counts and do not calculate registry-wide percentages from those inconsistent totals. For another registry comparison, see rare cat breeds.
Good questions
Which dog breeds had the fewest UK registrations in 2025?
Among entries with a positive count, Braque D’Auvergne (Import Register), Griffon Fauve de Bretagne (Import Register), Sloughi and Greenland Dog tied at one each. Ten breed entries recorded zero; another had no reported count.
Does zero registrations mean a breed is extinct?
No. It means this registry recorded no registrations for that entry in that year. Living dogs registered earlier or elsewhere are outside that annual count.
Why are some breeds divided into varieties?
The registry separately lists some coat, size and other varieties. The lookup preserves those rows rather than silently combining different entries.
