Market-research panel recruited to demographic targets; reported Global Step I results, not self-selected quiz users or a world census.
Which MBTI type is rarest?
ENTJ had the smallest count in the official U.S. English-language sample: 63 of 3,578 respondents, or 1.8%. ENFJ followed at 2.3%, then INFJ at 2.9%. ISTJ was the most common, with 628 respondents, or 17.6%.
These figures come from Tables 3, 5 and 7 of The Myers-Briggs Company’s U.S. supplement, published with the 2018 Global Step I assessment. The explorer calculates shares from the published counts. It keeps each four-letter type intact and gives tied percentages their underlying count order.
Why do other lists say INFJ?
A rarity ranking needs a named sample and assessment version. A different survey, country, language or version can produce a different order. “INFJ is the rarest” is not a universal result that can be applied to every dataset. In this specific table, INFJ has more respondents than ENTJ or ENFJ.
Check those details before comparing a quiz website’s user statistics with this reference. A count of people who chose to take an online quiz describes those users; it does not automatically describe a country.
Does the answer change by sex?
Yes. ENFJ is the least frequent type among the 1,686 men, while ENTJ is the least frequent among the 1,892 women. Both round to 1.4%, despite different counts and denominators. Switch the sample above to compare the complete distributions.
What this sample can tell you
Participants were English-speaking U.S. adults aged 18–86, recruited through a market-research panel with demographic targets. The supplement reports where the achieved sample differed from its targets. These are reported assessment results, not a census of personalities or a measure of anyone’s ability or value.
The publisher distinguishes reported type from a participant’s verified “best-fit” type; the tables here use reported type. The CSV preserves all three samples, their counts and their sources. For a different kind of rarity question, explore left-handedness or natural hair color.

Is this a personality test?
No. This page compares the frequencies of reported MBTI types in a published sample. It does not assign a type or reproduce assessment questions.
